🎓 Alum Spotlight: Lessons from La Joya ECHS: Vanessa Ramos Transforms Her Early College Experience into Teaching Triumphs
McAllen, TX - Once a promising student at La Joya Early College High School, Vanessa Ramos now stands at the head of a classroom at McAllen Memorial High School, inspiring a new generation as a math teacher.
Ramos views her years at LJECHS as a cornerstone in her development both personally and professionally.
"La Joya Early College had a significant impact on shaping the teacher I am today," Ramos said. "The faculty and staff at this institution are truly exceptional, always providing unwavering support to their students."
Every teacher has a story about an educator who made a lasting impression on them. For Ramos, that individual was Mrs. Gonzalez, a math teacher at LJECHS. For three pivotal years, Mrs. Gonzalez became a guiding force in Vanessa's academic life.
"Her dedication and passion have greatly inspired me to strive for excellence in my own teaching career," Ramos said.
But LJEC did more than just provide Ramos with academic inspiration. The early college model, which integrates high school and college courses, requires students to navigate the dual responsibilities of both academic worlds. For Ramos who graduated with an associate's degree, this experience proved invaluable.
"I experienced personal growth during my years at La Joya Early College, particularly in terms of my mental development, time management, and basic skills that students often lack at the college level,” Ramos said. "Thanks to LJEC, I was able to succeed in college without ever feeling overwhelmed.”
Today, as Ramos steps into her classroom at McAllen Memorial High School, she carries with her the legacy of La Joya Early College and the invaluable lessons she learned there.
"Attending LJEC was a highly rewarding experience," Ramos said.
