La Joya, Texas - At La Joya Early College, the paths of two friends intertwine in a dance of ambition and passion. Diego Rojas and Katelyn Peña are not just managing the rigors of advanced academics; they are also deeply entrenched in the world of dance.
While Diego Rojas is celebrated as the Principal Dancer with Grupo Folklorico Tabasco, his academic pursuits are equally commendable. As his senior year progresses, he's on the cusp of completing his associate's degree from South Texas College—a testament to his dedication and persistence.
“Honestly, it’s hard. I’m getting it done. It isn’t always easy, but there are moments when I just feel proud of myself, and then I push myself. I know that it will pay off at the end of the day,” said Rojas.
Upon attaining his associate's degree, he'll be one step closer to realizing his dream of becoming a dance teacher.
"Every time I dance, I am learning. And every step I take in college brings me closer to guiding others on the same path," Rojas said.
On the other side, Katelyn Peña, the dedicated Lieutenant Colonel of the La Joya Jewelettes, navigates her own unique journey. The leadership role has not only honed her dancing prowess but also instilled in her the values of teamwork and collaboration.
"Having to manage my time and being a leader with the team is a challenge that has taken commitment, but when I’m out there dancing or in the class succeeding, I can’t help but smile. Having friends like Diego also helps,” said Peña.
Their experiences highlight the boundless potential of determination of not just two friends, but the numerous students at LECHS who enjoy a true high school experience coupled with a college education that La Joya Early College offers students.
